Bahrain Championship Latest: Morning update

I’m a bit short for time at the moment so here is a quick update on what happened this morning…

Ali Carter 3-5 Michael Judge

In yet another shock result in the first round Michael Judge defeated Ali Carter 5-3 this morning to move into the next round. What makes his win even better is that at one stage he was 3-1 down, Carter starting the match well with breaks of 73, 44 and 100 to put himself in a good position. After the interval though it was Judge who scored the better and won four straight frames to complete a very fine win.

Michael has had a poor start to the season, losing all of his first round matches before this tournament and slipping down to 36th in the latest provisional rankings. This will be a big boost though and should put him back into the top 32 again provisionally, which must be his target for the end of the season.

Ali meanwhile will be gutted I think because with several top players out of the tournament already, he had a real opportunity to win his first ranking event title this week. As it is he’ll have to try again at the UK Championship in Telford next month.

Mark Allen 5-1 Judd Trump

One seed that has managed to avoid an early exit is Mark Allen who recorded a very impressive 5-1 win over Bristol youngster Judd Trump.

Despite the one-sided scoreline though it was actually a very close match, several frames going down to the last few balls with both players making regular half-centuries. In the end though it was Allen who handled these situations the better, winning five straight frames after Judd had taken the opener.

Following a couple of disappointing tournaments following his quarter-final in Northern Ireland, Allen needed to get his season back on track and this is an excellent way to do so, defeating a very good young player. Next up for Mark is Michael Judge in the last 16.

Mark Allen – Judd Trump 9-90(43,47), 71(67)-10, 83(48)-49(49), 70(36)-62(58), 69(69)-50(50), 66(54)-9
Ali Carter 3-5 Michael Judge 73(73)-17, 70(44)-0, 0-95(95), 100(100)-0, 8-71, 19-66(59), 0-71, 0-86(75)
