Fergal O’Brien, the only Irish player in the event, turns 40 next week and is taking inspiration from golden oldie Steve Davis and darts supremo Phil Taylor.
O’Brien has jumped from 37th to 30th in the world rankings this season and believes he can still win major titles.
“If you told me now that I won’t win another one, I’d be heart-broken. I’m not sure I would continue playing,” said the player who captured the British Open title in 1999 and reached the final of the Masters in 2001.
“Steve Davis is 54 and still going strong, and look at Phil Taylor in darts who is 51 but the best player by a mile.
“I’ve still got the desire and hunger that I always had and I’ve got a lot more knowledge of the game. Physically I’m fitter than I’ve ever been, I do a lot of running now and even won an 800m race at my athletic club. You don’t often see Fergal O’Brien and fast in the same sentence!
“I’m really looking forward to the event in Galway. It will be a great venue and I can’t wait for it – hopefully the Irish support will carry me through.”
