Davis Denies Higgins, Robertson Victorious

A dramatic evening at the UK Championship tonight as three-time former champion John Higgins was sent home from the tournament by Mark Davis, despite making his second maximum break of the season during the eighth frame of the match.

Elsewhere, Neil Robertson won a difficult match against Barry Hawkins, following which both players explained that the conditions were far from ideal, while earlier in the day both Mark Selby and surprise package Luca Brecel also booked their places in the quarter-finals.

Again, due to time constraints, please find below extracts from the press conferences of the four players involved this evening…

Murphy, Bingham Underline Credentials, Dott Struggling

Day four at the 2012 UK Championship saw the start of the last 16 and brought victories for Shaun Murphy, Stuart Bingham, Ali Carter and Matthew Stevens at the Barbican Centre in York.

Due to time constraints (having arrived home from York at gone midnight and needing to be up for work tomorrow), I do not have time to produce a full review of the day’s action, however you can click below to read quotes from the press conferences of all four players who were in action this evening.

Of particular interest perhaps are those from Graeme Dott, who gave a brutally honest assessment of how he feels about the state of his game at the moment, although of course coming barely seconds after defeat, emotions would understandably have been running high…

Murphy Through To Last 16 In York

FORMER world champion Shaun Murphy feels ready to add to the UK Championship title he won in 2008 with victory in the same competition in York.

Four years ago the Sale-based potter beat Marco Fu 10-9 in a gripping final in Telford, and having reached the last-16 at the Barbican, he is keen for more glory.

The Magician found his rhythm in a 6-3 first-round victory over Robert Milkins, and will now meet fellow former world champion Graeme Dott for a place in the quarter-finals.

After admitting he should have won more major titles in his career, the 30-year-old hopes to remain in York for the duration of the tournament.

“My mum keeps telling me I should have won more and mum’s are normally right,” said the world no.4.

“I would have liked to have added a few more trophies to my trophy cabinet, of course I would, but having got the biggest two and lost in the final of the third biggest last year, I feel like I am on the right track and at 30 I have got the rest of my career to add to it.

“York’s a great place. I have spent a lot of time here personally but to come here for the second biggest tournament, a tournament I have won before, is great and I hope to be here for the week.”

Asif Wins 2012 IBSF World Championship

While the UK Championship is currently dominating the snooker headlines this week, over in Bulgaria, Pakistan’s Muhammad Asif has recorded a 10-8 victory against Gary Wilson, to become the 2012 IBSF World Champion.

As well as being a prestigious tournament to win in its own right, the win will earn Asif a main tour card for the start of the 2013/14 season.

More will hopefully follow in due course as quotes emerge from Sofia.
