Royal London Watches Grand Prix 2008: Higgins takes control

A quick update on the first session of the Grand Prix final between John Higgins and Ryan Day…

John Higgins 5-2 Ryan Day

Apologies for the brief update, has been one of those days today, but just to say that John Higgins takes a three frame lead into tonight’s final session with Ryan Day.

In many ways it was the first frame that was the most important of the day as having both had chances, Ryan spurned a fantastic chance to go into a 1-0 lead with a miss on the final yellow. Clearing up to win it, a relieved Higgins then backed it up with a comfortable second frame and never really looked back.

Having seen John go 4-1 up and look like he was beginning to cut him adrift, Ryan crucially won the next to close it to 4-2, but Higgins produced a very nice break in the final frame to restore his lead and leave him as a heavy favourite tonight when they resume in about a couple of hours from now…

First Session: 77-39, 86(85)-47, 24-89(64), 90(57)-0, 73(52)-1, 4-119(37,82), 69(65)-21
