Afternoon Session

Wenbo whitewash

With his 5-0 win over Peter Ebdon at the Northern Ireland Trophy being under investigation by the betting commission it is typical that Liang would win today by the same scoreline!

You can’t take anything away from Wenbo however as he played brilliant snooker today, scoring heavily with breaks of 59, 74, 78, 78, 67 and finally a 109 to round off a stunning performance. Nigel just had no chance against scoring like that as Wenbo showed once again that if things go his way, he can produce devastating snooker.

Trump gains revenge

Another young gun to go through to Glasgow was Bristol’s Judd Trump who made up for defeat to Stephen Lee in Northern Ireland with a 5-2 win in their rematch today. Scoring well, Trump got off to the better start, moving 3-1 ahead and never really looked back.

It is good to see Trump make the TV stages of another event as following his big breakthrough last year when he made the World Championship, his results have not been as spectacular as they might have been. Having only recently turned 19 however, he has plenty of time to change this. As for Lee, that is two defeats in a row as he bids to get himself back into the top 16 and he will be hoping that he can turn it round sooner rather than later.

Stevens woes continue

Another former top 16 player struggling to regain his place is Welshman Matthew Stevens who suffered another surprising defeat today to Derby’s Dave Gilbert. Starting the match well it was looking good for Stevens but Gilbert is no mug and hit back brilliantly from 2-0 down to win the next five frames with a number of high breaks and book his place in Glasgow.
