Wilkinson retains Oceania crown

The 2009 Oceania Championship has been won by Australian veteran Glen Wilkinson who has successfully defended the title that he won in 2008…

As you can see, despite seemingly making just four breaks over 50, Glen was barely challenged throughout the tournament, losing just two frames in the round robin stage and another four in his knock-out matches.  I do not know much about Glen’s style of play but at 49 years old and not scoring heavily, I can only assume that he has a particularly strong safety game.

As he did not take up his main tour place last season however, it remains to be seen whether he will do so this time and if not, just who will get the tour spot instead. Last year the place was awarded to runner-up Chris McBreen so it might be the case that this year’s runner-up Daniel Thorp will be given the nod instead. The situation was however much easier for Chris as he lives in Germany so the regular flights to Prestatyn were not too challenging. For Thorp it would mean relocating or commuting from Australia which is sure to be hugely expensive, with no guarantee of winning any prize money at all.
