Morning Notes

Defending champion Ding Junhui put in a fabulous performance in the first of today’s two semi-finals to ease past Marco Fu in no time at all. Marco might be the higher ranked player now but after they shared the opening two frames, it was Ding who suddenly clicked into gear and fired in two centuries as well as a couple of other big breaks to take the next four in just 49 minutes.

Whether he plays Shaun Murphy or Mark Allen in the final he will take some stopping in this form, but the others can take heart from the fact that he was consistently the best player in the group stages of the Championship League earlier this year, only to falter in the knockout stages.

Having seen Ding’s scoring display earlier on, Mark Allen all but matched him in his semi-final as he made breaks of 86, 61, 72, 88 and 33 to defeat the in-form Shaun Murphy 5-2.

Back in action for the first time since his run to the World Championship semi-finals last month, it is good to see Mark pick up where he left off and reach the final here in China. As I said earlier, Ding will be a formidable opponent on home soil but one thing that Mark will not be lacking at the moment is confidence and tomorrow’s final promises to be a real match to savour…
