Rumours have been circulating today regarding Mark Williams and it has now been confirmed over at Global Snooker that he has suffered a broken right wrist and must now be considered a serious doubt for his season opening match against Joe Swail out in Shanghai…

For the full story of how he sustained the injury (slipping on a floor tile at home), over at Global Snooker please click here.

Having made it back inside the top 16 this is a real blow for the former world champion as currently lying in 18th place on the latest provisional list, he cannot afford to be missing any of this season’s six ranking events if he wants to stay there.

His last 32 tie with Joe Swail in Shanghai however could well come too soon. Looking back to Graeme Dott last season who also suffered a break to his bridging arm, he did not return to action until the Bahrain Championship almost six weeks after his accident. Even then he was understandably short of match practice and found himself losing out to Barry Pinches in his opening match before finally getting back to winning ways at the UK Championship in Telford a month later.

Will Mark retain his place in the 16? Have your say below:

It’s really unlucky for Mark to get the season underway with such an accident. I hope it doesn’t effect him the way a wrist injury did in 2006, and hope he recovers quickly. He is always one of my favourites and I tipped him to win a ranking event next season. I still back my prediction. I dont’t know if he can compete in Shanghai, but whether he does or not, I expect a good season for Mark.
