As I’m sure all of you are aware by now, the verdict is in on the John Higgins sting and he has now been cleared to return to action following the end of a six-month ban which will conclude in November. He has however been fined the sum of £75,000 for ‘intentionally giving the impression to others that they were agreeing to act in breach of the Betting Rules’ and ‘failing to disclose promptly to the Association full details of an approach or invitation to act in breach of the Betting Rules.’ His former manager Pat Mooney has meanwhile been banned from playing any future role in snooker.
I will post my thoughts on this verdict over the coming days but for now, Dave Hendon pretty much has the situation covered from all angles over at SSB here.

Finally…… It was expected that he wouldn’t leave unblemished due to his initial statement. Luckily, his ‘russian mafia’ story was accepted and he can feel a bit relieved. But only time will tell if the damage done to his reputation can in any way be fixed. As Dave said, only John Higgins knows the real truth and I can’t feel 100% sure that he was only being a fool by not reporting it. I am looking forward to your take on this Matt.

When Higgins does return, will Liu Song be unable to play the remaining ranking events, or will the player ranked 97th at the time (currently Reanne Evans) drop off the tour instead?

It will be Liu, the other 96 have all earned their places for the full season and Liu was just given an opportunity to play in the first couple of events while John was away.
