World Championship 2009 Qualifiers: Monday News

Monday sees another ten matches played to a conclusion and by the end of play we will not only know the identity of the last 64 players in the competition, but also have a pretty good idea as to who will be on the tour next season…

Observations

Again I am taking a day off today before returning to Sheffield tomorrow so I won’t be able to give that detailed a report as this round comes to an end.

On paper though it seems to be the complete opposite of yesterday, several players earning significant leads this time as opposed to the series of 5-4 scorelines we saw before. As far as tour survival goes, it has been an excellent session for Patrick Wallace who needs just four more frames to reach the next round. Doing so will earn him a further 500 points and move him up above Atthasit Mahitthi and Simon Bedford, into the top 8 on the one-year list. Speaking of Bedford he has endured something of a nightmare session and if he is to cling on to a tour place, must turn things around this evening. Mahitthi though will be hoping that he doesn’t because he will lose his spot otherwise.

The other big match is that between Rod Lawler and Matt Selt, the winner being guaranteed a place in the all-important top 64 at the end of the season while the loser will have to rely on the one year list and start a round further back in all of the events. At 5-3 to Rod right now, that looks to have all the potential to be the latest finish tonight I suspect.

Bad news for James McBain, Andrew Pagett and Rodney Goggins however, all three have fallen well behind and their already slim chances of tour survival look to be all but gone now…

Three matches over this afternoon and Jamie Jones has kept his hopes of staying on the tour alive with a strong win over Robert Milkins. He still has a long way to go though, his next match against Andrew Higginson being another must-win clash.

Elsewhere Mark Davis and Paul Davies have completed wins over their unseeded opponents Peter Lines and Lewis Roberts respectively. For Mark this is a superb result, lifting him back up into the top 48 provisionally and meaning that if he can stay there, he has one less qualifying match to play in events next season. In addition it also moves him into the top 32 on the one-year list, leaving him well-placed to continue his rise next season, though of course many of the players around him are yet to play this week.

Lewis Roberts though becomes the latest player to be officially relegated from the circuit, while Peter Lines now has to wait and see whether he will cling onto a place in the top 64 or whether he will have to rely on the one-year list. Either way he will be on the tour next season, the issue is just whether he will be starting in round one or two of events.

Drama between Jin Long and David Gray as from 8-6 down, David draws level at 8-8 before the match is taken off to allow the evening session to start. With Gray desperately needing to win in order to keep his top 64 place, it promises to be a thrilling end as their match is now ultimately the best of three…

In tonight’s matches, Stuart Pettman and David Morris have swiftly completed their wins over Andrew Pagett and James McBain, knocking the pair off the tour in the process. That also means that David Gray and Jin Long is back on…and David Gray loses it 10-8. Unbelievable really, David now must win a match out in China or he will be one of the most talented players to have fallen off the main tour in a long time, a huge shame considering that he is still only 30 years old.

In what was effectively a top 64 play-off between Rod Lawler and Matt Selt, Rod came out on top and now retains his place in the 64 for another season, at the expense of Gray as mentioned above. For Selt it is a blow, though he will remain on the tour too by virtue of his high one-year points tally.

Two more matches come to a close as Martin Gould holds off a gutsy fightback from Rodney Goggins, while Patrick Wallace records a crucial win against the man who reached the final of the Masters qualifying tournament Mark Joyce.

And Simon Bedford completes a brilliant comeback to defeat David Roe 10-7 and surely secure his place on the tour. Considering that he was 6-2 down at the start of the evening that is a great effort from the man who knocked Mark Williams out of the Grand Prix earlier this season.
