ONEFORSEVEN Explained

Snooker fans will no doubt be aware of the new ONEFORSEVEN format being developed by Global Snooker and here is an illustration of how the events work from the organisers themselves…

In the video Neil Tomkins explains the rules and players such as Mark Williams, Ryan Day, Stephen Lee and Mark Selby comment on how much they enjoyed the first event in Cardiff.

Personally I must admit that the format is not something that appeals to me particularly. As I have said in previous posts when discussing the six-red format, as far as snooker is concerned I am something of a traditionalist and have always preferred the original format, particularly the longer frame matches that we will see at the World Championship qualifiers.

That being said however it is important that new ideas and new formats are tried, not particularly for me but in order to attract new fans to the game and give the players an opportunity to express themselves away from the high pressure ranking event circuit.

Any thoughts on the venture?

I was there and totally enjoyed it as did the audience and the players. The format is particularly suitable for younger kids as it does not constraint them to stay seated and silent for long periods of time. And they had plenty of opportunities to chat with their heroes. It was nice to see people coming there as families and enjoy it together… from grand-parents to grand-children.

I think this is a smashing idea. Actually, while they may have dreams about telly people coming in, I have doubts about this kind of event working on TV. Directing this could be a mess. But as an event for paying spectators with all the freedom to move around the venue, this is just jaw-droppingly great. After seeing the scoreboards used, no-one can come and say that it’s too hard to follow or anything like that.

I applaud Global Snooker. Well done. Hopefully I’m wrong about that TV bit, cos at the end of the day, money means everything.
