Good wins for Matt Selt and Simon Bedford this afternoon, picking up where they left off yesterday and giving their chances of retaining a spot on the main tour a significant boost. James McBain and Patrick Wallace have a little bit more to do but their 10-2 wins have at least kept them in contention.

First result to come in this evening is a comfortable win for Rodney Goggins who finally brings the run of veteran Tony Knowles to an end. It was always likely to be one match too far for Tony but it is nice to see him in there and winning matches early on. For Goggins it does not do much for his position in the rankings, he still needs to keep on winning, but just three matches away from the Crucible you never know.

Same goes for Andrew Pagett who has completed a straightforward win over Paul Davison, relegating him from the tour in the process. His prospects of survival remain slim but he’s still in there for now.

One thing that should be pointed out, as well as the ranking points available, it is also important for these players at the lower end of the rankings to do as well as possible  because if they can win two matches to reach the last 64, they will manage to earn some much needed prize money. The amount available for a last 64 spot is £4,600 so that must be a great incentive for everyone competing in round two during Sunday and Monday.

11:30pm and still we have four matches in play, but as I say that Lewis Roberts completes a 10-8 victory against India’s Aditya Mehta who has started to show some form in recent tournaments. No luck today though and it is Roberts who goes through to face Paul Davies in round two.

The clock strikes midnight and we have another couple of results in, important ones too as Peter Lines and Jin Long book their places in the next round. For Long this moves him back into the top 64 having been overtaken by Matt Selt earlier on today while Lines has all but secured his place on the tour by adding 900 points to his already high one-year tally.

Finally at around 12:40am, Jamie Jones withstands a brave effort from Atthasit Mahitthi to book a clash with Robert Milkins tomorrow afternoon. For Mahitthi though he now faces an anxious wait to see if he will retain his tour place…
