Rankings Update – The Race To The Crucible 2014

AllenThe conclusion of the German Masters marks the fifth mid-season revision of the seeding list and although many eyes will now be on the latest provisional money list, which will determine tour places and come into force at the start of next season, there is one last, crucial cut-off to keep an eye on this year on the points list.

The final, sixth mid-season revision of 2013/14 comes at the end of March, following the Players Championship event currently scheduled to take place in Thailand and the final list following that event will be used to determine the seeding list for the 2014 World Championship at the Crucible.

While there remain five events still to be played between now and that cut-off, the new provisional list, on which all points set to drop between now and then have already been removed, throws up more than a few surprises, with Mark Williams, Matthew Stevens, Graeme Dott and Mark Allen among those who as it stands, would have to qualify to play at the Crucible this year…

General Cup Glory For Davis

Just a few days on from his victory against Neil Robertson in the final of the Six Red World Championship, Mark Davis yesterday repeated that feat, with a comprehensive 7-2 victory against the world number one in the final of the General Cup International in Hong Kong.

The fifth staging of the event, won previously by the likes of Ricky Walden, Stephen Lee and last year by Robertson himself, saw a strong line-up of professionals take part, but it was two of the form players of the moment who made it through to the final.

For Davis, his group stage saw him overcome Ricky Walden and Shaun Murphy to qualify in second place behind Marco Fu, while Robertson saw off Andrew Higginson and friend Joe Perry to qualify behind Crucible finalist Barry Hawkins.

The two duly came through their semi-finals, before Davis then took what is his sixth consecutive victory against Robertson in all competitions, to lift his third professional 15-red title.

Both players will next be in action next week at the Shanghai Masters, as ranking event snooker returns to our screens on Eurosport.

Davis Downs Robertson To Defend Six Reds World Championship

Congratulations to Mark Davis, who has today defeated Neil Robertson 8-4 to successfully defend the Six Red World Championship in Bangkok, Thailand.

Early in the match it looked as though there might be a different outcome, as world number one Robertson started strongly to move into a 3-1 lead, however Davis hit back to take six consecutive frames, leaving him just one away from victory.

Though Robertson was to pull one back, Davis was not to be denied his second world title in Bangkok and his third in all, taking into account his Killarney success four years ago against Mark Williams.

Quite why Mark’s record is so outstanding in six red snooker is difficult to explain, of course Mark is an excellent player in all forms of the game, but it would appear to be more than coincidence that he in particular has been so successful at the event.

Earlier in the week, Mark defeated the likes of Mark Selby and John Higgins, as well as Thailand’s Dechawat Poomjaeng, while the ever-consistent Robertson saw off Shaun Murphy and Stuart Bingham in the latter stages.

Next week sees the staging of the General Cup International from Hong Kong, while ranking event snooker will then return the following week, with the final stages of the Shanghai Masters event as John Higgins looks to defend the title that he won 12 months ago.

Race To The 2014 Masters – A First Look

It might yet be five months away, but with the next two seedings cut-offs (ahead of the International and UK Championship), being of less importance, given the advent of the move to flat draws this season, the next big revision is that in December following the UK Championship, which will most notably, determine which 16 players will qualify for this season’s Masters.

Click below for an early look ahead, to see who is currently in the running for those places…
