Closing In On The Cut: July 2013

It might only be June in the 2013/14 season, but already the first seeding revision of the new campaign is fast approaching, with just two more events to come before the places are set for the Shanghai Masters.

While such seedings revisions will take on less significance in this new era of snooker, the Shanghai Masters remains one of the three ranking events to be played under the old system this season, this cut-off is one to keep an eye on.

Rankings Updated…Or Not?

A very brief post to flag up something that has arisen this evening, it would appear that there is something amiss with the latest world ranking list published by World Snooker following John Higgins’ victory at the ET1 event.

While the points from the UKPTC1 event in 2011 have been correctly removed, it would appear that points from the weekend’s action in Bulgaria have only been added for a handful of players ranked outside of the top 64.

So long as the points are added at some point soon, the error will not make any difference, Neil Robertson will still reclaim top spot in the rankings for the first time since 2010, though his lead will be increased by a further 1,600 points.

The seeding list though will not be altered until following the ET2 event, and you can see the latest projected seeding list here at PSB, as the race for favourable seedings continues for one of the three remaining events not to be staged using a flat 128 draw.

The action continues today in Yixing, with the start of this season’s first Asian Tour event…

Provisional Money List Available – What Does It Mean?

After nearly five years of writing this blog, it is probably fair to say that PSB has come to be associated with snooker’s world rankings, particularly as I have updated the latest projected seedings page, tracking the race for favourable seedings and main tour places at various cut-off points.

With the traditional points-based ranking system set to be replaced by a list based upon prize money earned however, attention now turns to how such a money list will look going forward.

I am pleased to say therefore that you can new view PSB’s first unofficial draft of that list here. Please note that the list is purely for illustrative purposes at this stage and will not be used until the end of this season.

Click below for an explanation as to what the list shows, why it differs to that published by World Snooker and just why this list is so important, even this early in the season…

While Barry Hearn as the chairman of World Snooker is the man responsible for commercial side of professional snooker, the man at the head of the sport’s regulatory body, the WPBSA, is former world number 28 Jason Ferguson, who since his re-election to the board as chairman in July 2010, has overseen a period of unprecedented change in professional snooker.

Snooker Rankings 2012/13: Points v Money II

While in the midst of the build up to the start of the 2013 World Championship I am yet to thoroughly analyse the provisional tournament calendar published for next season, as well as the implications of Barry Hearn’s players letter, there was one thing that stood out, namely the following paragraph:

“For those events which remain on the old system (The World Championship, Australian Open and Shanghai Masters), any player seeded through to an advanced stage, who loses their first match, will be paid in full but will only receive 50% of this money in their Official Rankings (i.e. similar to the current 50% rule on ranking points) and this system will be applied to all tournaments following the 2012 World Snooker Championship.

Back in February, I posted a comparison of ranking points and prize money earned to date this season, at that point up until the German Masters, kindly provided to me by fellow snooker fan @JoanneBallantyn.

I am pleased to say therefore that Joanne has helped to provide me with an updated list, comparing ranking points earned to date this season, against prize money earned, taking into account the qualification stated within Barry’s letter that seeded losers will only receive 50% money to their official ranking total.

For illustration purposes then, please click below to see what that means, all figures are approximate…

Robertson Victorious In Beijing Final

It has been a long time in coming, but Neil Robertson today captured his seventh career ranking event title in Beijing, defeating Mark Selby 10-6 to win the 2013 China Open.

Earning him the top prize of £85,000, together with 7,000 ranking points, the result will no doubt come as a big relief to the Australian, as attention now turns to Sheffield and the all-important World Championship…
